IN SHORT: I'm trying to decide on two styles for the comic, you've already seen two pages... but those color styles take forever... So I ask which looks best. considering time and production speed

LONG Version: Yeah This is why it takes me forever to do anything, coloring, I am getting faster at it, but if you've noticed my last 3 post, there was a "sprite" like comic I was able to create in half the time.

Problem is most would say it lacks the refinement I have in my color work, this is a Dilemma for me since I want to crank work out faster but don't really know how or what I should do :)

I appreciate your input if you got the moment and also to check out my last few post with the Unicorn comic and such to understand a little more.

Each image here has its own charm, one is easier but could be seen as lazy, eh I Dunno I love to just keep the quality up, but also not sacrifice the actual Quality...

And yes Ed good buddy, those are your shoes I used for inspiration :)

I definitely like the look of the top one more but if you're wanting a comic series, you will have to fight against the clock and hitting consistent release dates...such a tough call

I like colored, but there's a raw feel to the bottom one that makes it ok. It would still work.

I'm all for you playing with a simplified coloring style, however I'm going to have to go on record here and say that the second picture isn't the way to go. I just don't like it.

Mixing color and black and white is something I myself toyed with back in the day and I found that it a) Rarely looked good enough to justify the extra effort necessary to add color in the first place and b) Was usually just laziness on my part from wanting to not go through the effort to color properly. When I asked for feedback it usually showed. I'm getting the same vibe from you on this one and I wanted to warn you before you invest hours on this.

Also keep in mind that there are other options as well. You could do work in black and white for a while. If you want a touch of color simply convert the line art into a color of your choice. You could also take this opportunity to investigate tones or a pure black and white inked style. I think both would work well for you. Baring that you could also take this chance to investigate (mimic) another person's coloring style. Some good places to start are:

SIDE NOTE: Also, While I'm in critic mode. Something which has always bugged me a bit about your style is that you never put real borders around your comic frames. Even if you do the line around the panels in color you should really consider framing your shots a bit better with a real firm and solid border. You coloring jobs are normally really good but the effect is somewhat disrupted by the fact that you tend to use this brushed style that blurs the line between inside and outside of the frame. In a few cases this actually confuses where one panel begins and another ends.

That's my biggest complaint right now though. Other than that I really do love your stuff so don't let my ranting get you down. Good luck!

Great advice , I appreciate it :)
Hmm I thought the border thing was cleaver, haha oh well, i guess i could use it , sorry it bugged ya, just thought I keep the story flow going design wise via the eye not being disturbed by bars and boxes, I'll try it out.

I have a similar problem actually. I can probably get through a bunch of sketches in a short amount of time. My speed has improved in that regard, but my coloring takes forever. To be honest, I have a tough time deciding because I've kinda seen both sides of the fence. As an appreciator I enjoy seeing the colored product. It's easier on the eyes and, since your coloring style is VERY unique, it's great eye candy to soak in. The second style might take a bit of getting used to. The pixelated edges might tire the eye after a while, though, since it's black and white, it may balance out. As an artist, I can understand why you'd want this style. Sometimes you just NEED to get your ideas down. That's how I'm feeling at the moment. I'm going to lean towards the color for this one. I understand it's hard work, but so far what you have looks great and, as I mentioned, your coloring style is phenomenal. It's like a deviation every panel! XD Hope this helps a little.

considering the bottom takes half the time as the top, I vote bottom. It still looks awesome and you get to make more comic.

The comic style in the bottom part looks very cool, that line art adding that touch quite nicely.

The upper style looks more definite in its application of color, bringing out more through hues.

I like both of them, to be honest, but I might lean a bit more towards the upper one.

I hope that my input has helped some.

Hmm, I'm not quite sure which one I would pick. As some people have said, the first style is what you typically use.

If I were the one deciding what style the comic should have, I would like to know the specific type of character the comic would have if either of the styles were used. Your first style is very lush and detailed, but still cartoonishly stretchy. The second style is much more stylised, reminding me of Frank Millar's Sin City in places. To me, this style seems wilder and off the rails.

Again, I'll need to know where you're going with the comic, so that it'll help me with my decision.

I think the bottom version is definitely better for a comic, considering comics should, in my opinion, focus on story more than artwork. (and a comic starts to become a chore instead of a fun thing when you have to work too hard on the art, lol.) you could use the colored top version for significant panels like introducing a new character or whatnot.

It's very difficult for me to even choose from these two choices. The way the drawings express themselves are much different and appealing in their very own ways. Though, I'm sure most people would probably vote for the first choice.

The second choice provides you a faster way to approach the development of the comic, and also contains a unique, fun style of its own. Perhaps these and the related benefits could possibly clear things up, if you were considering to go with the second choice. Pixels are also nifty, in my opinion.

Seriously though I love the top one, you always have a magical way with colors. I also like the retro 3D glasses :)

They're both really well done, but I prefer the first. It just feels more... complete, I guess.

And don't feel like you have to churn out artwork like a machine. Quality is always more important than quantity.

Both styles are so different that is quite hard to compare them. I'd say the second choice has more personality, it stands out much more than the first. The problem is that overusing it in future works might weaken this charm. It's something to be done only in a few pictures.

The first one reminds me more of you. It fits greatly in a variety of situations, and the overall piece is perfectly done. The only negative point, that I thought worth commenting, is the typography. The typeface fits in the graphic style, but not the mood of the picture. Of course I'm not elling you to use Comic Sans (gawd no...), but aiming for personality rather than graphicality should be the way to go, in this case.

Me likey both of them...but personally I like the top just because it looks a lot more refined, nice smooth outlines and a good sense of color balance (hope that didn't sound boring :XD: ) However I do like what you did for the lineart for the bottom one, very comicy =D and yes everybody digs shoes with untied laces...just looks cooler and more rugged if you know what i mean =D
